So, I went to the local farm store today and they had their baby chicks in for sale. I noticed one laying on the bottom of the tub, dragging its right leg. I felt horrible and couldn't leave it there. The attendant told me I could just have it because they would probably end up killing it anyway.. I have no idea what could be wrong with it. Its not what seems like splay leg, it doesn't go to the side but straight behind it. It tries to stand on it for a few seconds but it just falls over. It is still too small to walk on just one leg so I don't know what to do. I called the vet and they told me to bring it in tomorrow, so I guess I will see what happens from there. I asked if they would put her to sleep if need be and they said yes, that they would humanely euthanize her if it's not fixable but I'm worried they won't know much about chicks and I will end up killing it over something that could have been treated... Any suggestions?

I personally euthanize chicks that I don't think can be fixed which may be the case if the other leg cannot be lined up with the one that works. If the chick can only stand on one leg, it is possible that it may be able to learn how to use it's one leg, but are often prone to that one leg giving out when the chick starts to grow. Good luck with the chick, and hopefully it's not that bad and can be fixed.
