Hi! I think my duck may have a broken leg. When she swims, she can still use it though. I will try to attach pictures so y'all can see what is going on. What can I do? Please help me!!!

She is able to use her right leg, it's just her left one, she walks on her knee. I read about an epsom salt soak, but not to let her drink it. has anyone tried this?

UPDATE- i made a splint with some plastic. i put her foot on it and i spread her toes out, and taped it with medical tape so it would be easy on her skin. She started walking semi-normally! so i am not sure if her leg is broken, she can still swim pretty well. i will continue with the splints, hoping and praying that it will help her!

It looks pretty bruised. Maybe a small break that will hopefully heal on it's own. I would keep her contained in a small area so she isn't over using the leg it will heal faster that way. And yes Epsom salt soaks can help with swelling and inflammation your right, just don't let her drink it.

Ok good. We have some extra wire left over from building the tractor, so I will just use that to separate a part of it for her and her best friend. :D We made a little boot/shoe for her and she spreads her foot out more after only a day! The chickens took it off though lol, so we have to put a new one on everyday. I use medical tape so it won't rip her skin off, but it comes off kind of easily. ok definitely will start the soaks.

If you keep her from the chickens in her own recovery place maybe the boot will stay on longer. I'd also start her on some B complex vitamins with at least 150 mgs of niacin in them you can add to their drinking water or use Nutritional yeast on their feed. 1 Tab per cup of feed. This may help her recover better. What ever you make for them be sure it's predator proof.

Yes we were thinking we should separate her, the chickens can be kind of crazy. :D We are giving her chick grower feed, durvet vitamins and electrolytes for poultry in her water, and also we give her sweet peas, and she gets swim time every day, we try to shoot for twice a day, but if we can't she gets it once a day for as long as she wants. She is a really good swimmer, and she still uses that leg to swim. She doesn't get tired as easily as the other ducks when they swim. And she can eat underwater too. She is the most mentally advanced out of our ducks and chickens lol.
