This black one is the only one of the bunch with feathers on her feet. Maybe a Brahma? I can't quite get a handle on how many breeds there are with feathered feet.

Not sure on the first bird, but the second is a Cochin, definitely not a Brahma.

I have no idea! I have a mottled Java, and she looked like that as a chick, but I was just guessing.

Yes, they look a lot alike as chicks. I have Mottled Javas from Welp -- and am basing that ID on the fact that they wouldn't have put Anconas into a Brown Egg Assortment.

Thanks for all the IDs! We are so excited to start knowing more about these chicks. I will try to get better pictures of some of the combs in a day or so.

Tiger looks to be a gold laced wyandotte to me.

First one shown individually I believe is a Barred Rock. The comb is wrong for a Dominique and skin color is wrong for a Marans.

Second is an Ancona. I don't see anything else in McMurray's catalog that looks like this.

Third appears to have a single comb, so not a Brahma. I believe that's a Black Cochin as I see yellow on its feet.

Fourth, the ugly duckling, I believe is a Silver Spangled Hamburg. A shot of its comb would help to confirm.

Fifth and sixth, the pterodactyl and the orange ones, are all Red. Those first feathers often have some black speckling like that in hatchery-quality Red breeds. As for their actual breed, I'm inclined to say that they're Rhode Island Reds, but the way you describe pterodactyl as skinnier makes me wonder if she could be one of McMurray's Red Leghorns? New Hampshire is also a possibility for any of them, but those tend to be paler.

Number seven, I believe you are correct in guessing White Leghorn.

Eight, I believe are Easter-eggers. The green legs kind of pushed me in that direction, but a view of their combs would help to confirm.

Nine, Tiger, if that's the same chick visible in the background of breed eight's picture, is a Gold Laced Wyandotte. The comb is incorrect for a Barnevelder and I don't see that breed in McMurray's catalog anyway.

I believe ten and eleven, the chipmunk striped babies, are Easter-eggers as well. Ten appears to have a pea comb and eleven has puffy cheeks.


I think I got all of them, and to the best of my knowledge. View attachment 2858339 It will be easier to know for sure on the trickier ones (especially the Reds) once they've grown more and are more feathered in, so please check back in a month or so with update pictures!

The first one is probably an ancona and the second one is a cochin

My daughter calls this one the ugly duckling. It started out with very nondescript grey down, and is now developing an interesting speckle pattern.

I call this one the pterodactyl. She arrived with bare patches on her chest, and her feathers are still very patchy and odd compared to the others. I wonder if she's the same breed as the two orange ones I'll post next, but her body is skinnier and taller, and has less of a rump, than those two.

Then there are the two orange ones. I wondered if they were Rhode Island Reds, but now their wing feathers seem to be more variegated than that.

For the first one, I need a better pic of comb but I think it is a hamburg too. The red ones look like Red sexlinks or RIRs or production reds.

There are two that started out as classic yellow chicks, and their wings seem to be pure white. Leghorns?

Then there are two of these. They started out with light but definite stripes of pale brown on white/yellow on their head, but they're getting harder to tell apart from the yellow/white chicks.

They are probably both Easter Eggers but the second one definitely is.

Dark one likely OE or CCL. It should develop a crest in a few weeks.
Lighter ones are either brown leghorns or welsummer is my best guess.

Agree with Ancona for the black and white one.
Black one has a single comb, so could be a standard cochin, Marans or Marans based OE.

She's got a single comb so a Cochin, not a Brahma.
