The chickens are more likely to injure that snake! I'd move it out to a safer spot.
Garter snakes do have a nasty smelling 'fluid' that they can let out if frightened. But do move it on elsewhere, they do good work...

It went back out, they same way it entered...I don't want to hurt him....just make him go away
