This sweet duck came to our porch steps yesterday here in Southern Wisconsin. I can't identify it. Torn between Mallard and Rouen. It must be young - it's only about a foot in length. It's obviously been caged before. Looking for owner, but it seems likely that I'll need to find it a good home. Knowing what breed it is might help.

It's difficult to tell, but it may be a Mallard... Or a Rouen! Honestly, a lfew breeds look like this as juveniles, too, especially the females.

How does it act around people?

It's very friendly. Stays close, follows. Head bobs. Doesn't want to be touched but nibbled on my painted toenails! Now caged and doesn't seem to mind.

Do you know anyone in the neighbourhood that would have had ducks? If not, then it's probably a mallard that someone raised. They can fly, which is probably how it ended up at your place.

Depending on where you are located, it may be illegal to have it... Are there any duck rescues around?

Not aware of anyone raising ducks. I'm thinking it's been abandoned after the fluffy duckling stage by an irresponsible pet owner. It's OK to have it here. No duck specific Rescues, and others I've found aren't taking wildfowl because of the avian flu. This bird can fly, not sure how far. BUT I assume that even Rouen can fly while they're this lightweight.

It never ceases to amaze me the callousness and stupidity of people. Someone dumped a kitten just over a year ago. She couldn't have been more than five weeks old. We have raccoons, fishers, foxes, coyotes, even wolves here. Had we not heard it, she would have ended up as something's dinner, for sure.

Now, she is a holy terror that is loved and pampered.
