HELP! I'm new at this chicken stuff.... What sex is he/she *PICS*

I was given 3 Americana awhile back. and I don't know much about them. So I have tons of questions!

At what age do they start laying?

I have one that I think is a roo! I'll post a picture so you can tell me what you think. Also if it is a roo will he be bad around younger kids?

I keep them in a 5' X 5' chicken coop at night with a 4' X 17'run... Will that be ok with 5 hens and one roo? They are free range in the day time. Well Thank you for your help

Welcome, Welcome. Ok first yes for the amount of birds you have that should be plenty of room. Second handle the roo as much as possible, most times the more you handle him the better he will be, but nothing is promissed. Never leave a small child around a roo. Pullets will start laying anywhere between 16- 30 weeks, and first eggs may be very small or thin shell, so dont freak out. I will leave the sexing to EE experts, I am not best with tthis breed. Good luck with your chicken endevors.

It does look like you have a very pretty rooster and 2 pullets there, in my opinion.

5 x 5 should be enough room in a coop for 6 chickens. I believe most people feel 4 sq ft per bird is minimum in the coop. In the run it is 10 sq ft each bird. So you should be fine with that number too if it is 4 x 17.

Yes, that is certainly a roo. As long as you handle him, he should not become aggressive. It seems as though you have a very nice place for them.

Thank you! Well The 3 Americanas wont let me come near them. Very shy. Can I just keep the roo in the pin so my kids wont get hurt? We want to keep him(if it is a him) But if there is any chance of him hurting one of the kids...... Well thank you so much!
