I'm sorry you lost it. I think people normally do the float test when they are past due. Chickens aren't due until the 21st day or so. You aren't the first to drop an egg and have the chick die. I've 'helped' before and killed a chick on accident. And yes, I felt terrible. But no use beating yourself up. Next time, a trick to stop bleeding is a little cornstarch on it. I've heard of people sealing cracked eggs with melted wax, but not sure if that works on almost fully developed eggs.
