I found this thing inside one of the nest boxes in my coop and have no idea what it is. I have had soft shell eggs before so know what they look like. I work in biology and my gut instinct is that is an ovary but I have never heard of a chicken lying it’s on ovary. I am planning on dissecting it after I have had my dinner as it appears to have a solid mass inside it. All 6 hens look happy and healthy and I do not have a cockerel. If anyone knows what I have in my hands I would greatly appreciate any help identifying what it is.
Thanks
Ceejay

That is under developed egg. What you are seeing is the yolk and the membrane that lines the shell. It was most likely laid by a hen that recently had some stress/trauma, ie has been dropped, chased, an aggressive rooster, or an old or very young hen. Don't worry, the chickens should be fine as long as this isn't a daily occurrence. And believe it or not, it's edible but I wouldn't do it, lol XD. Good luck! And you might want to feed some oyster shell free choice to help prevent this kind of thing, lol. :)

Thanks chickenoverlord for that. I have open it up and it does appears to be yolk inside. Thank you again for putting me mind at ease.

Wow have you opened it up? Is it egg material inside? I agree with above post and I'd increase her calcium. Best wishes

wow that is creepy looking O_O hahaha..good to hear its only an under developed egg.. when you said ovary i put down my food and kept reading in fear...lol

Yeah, it's nothing to worry about, lol. And your welcome. You should have seen my face the first time I found something like that in my nest box, lol XD. I immediately called the ornithological vet, and they calmed me down, lol. Good luck, and remember to give them some oyster shell!
