HELP! incubatING JAPANESE QUAILS

Water candling is not a very accurate way to check for signs of life. All it can tell you for sure is that the egg is fresh or not.

Chicks dont die in the egg because just because the egg got moved. It happens sometimes sure, but they can move around inside the egg alot more than people think, hence the birds that still hatch hours after the other chicks have been kicking their eggs around like a soccer ball. I know people that hatch without ever turning their auto turner off and they still get good hatches.

I would have to disagree the water test is very very accurate sinkers are dud eggs floaters roughly half and more of the egg out of water are dehydrated typically, floaters that have 10-30% shell out if water are viable eggs but may show no signs of life possible death at full term. And floating with 10-30% out if water and rocking egg are viable living chicks. Id be willing to say 90% correct. And you are right the eggs rolling doesnt mean the chick is dead but has a much higher % of death. If pipped and rolls into your wire not allowing the chick to zip most if the time the chick wont re pip in a different location unless freshly pipped. But you are right moving then doesnt kill them. Just gives anhigher chance of death. And the auto turner i can see still allowing the hatch. It rotates 30degrees to each side so i can understand hatching with an auto turner on. Try water candle again just bring your water up to temp and you can typically see movement within 1min on the egg. But all viable eggs i place back in incubator but seperated and duds i discard.

Ive been doing this for a long time, i wasnt looking for tips on candling i was sharing experience. I run too many birds and too many incubators to slow down and candle anything. If it doesnt hatch easy and on time 90% of the time it isnt fit for my flock anyway and the other 10% im fine with not getting.

If you keep good notes youll find over the years most birds that didnt hatch easy and on hatch day end up with some sort of developmental or thrift issues at some point in their life.

Oh i forgot if its a waste of time for you to candle its pointless for everyone. Ill remember that and i have been keeping great notes, hints the reason i gave advice. Look i enjoy this site because i can get ideas and information from people that try countless things. Trial and error can pay off for everyone. Water testing can help the small guys increase their hatch sice i started i have increased my hatches with it. If you offer advice be willing to take it maybe someone can help you some day. Ill never stop listening ti ideas. And

People seem to getting pretty touchy on here. Think of it this way of you don't want to take the advice then don't. I doubt you guys know each other personally so why let then affect you.

I don't see anything wrong with giving another prospective on things. I agree with both of you. The egg wiggling sounded like a cool idea when I was starting however I never did it. I tried candling a few times but decided it was a waste of time for me also. I have had a few eggs blow up after the hatch while cleaning up that would have been nice to have avoided.

I agree kingmt i dont loose sleep over it i just dont want people to toss somethig out the window that many people use until like you have decided its just not for them. It works for me i just hatched 92/101. Thats with getting rid of non viables. But for me i am small i only hatch 200-300 a month quail and they are all feeder birds so very little time spent on it. I dont want to knock others advice people will figure out for themselves what works and doesnt. Heck anything can happen ive seen people hatch with a wet cloth and a desk lamp haha.
