Some dogs got into the coop and killed all 15 chickens and 1 duck leaving my Mallard the only survivor.. His wing is gone, down to the bone and some meat.. I don't want to give up on him, hes eating and drinking, and getting in his water bowl.. The Sherrif told us to put some type of oil to keep flies on so my brother did so. I'm not sure what to do from there.. hes out in the coop alone missing his best bud

im not the most familiar with ducks, but I would keep some blue coat sprayed on it. if you let him swim only let him in clean water to avoid any harmful bacteria.
make sure to let him heal before you throw him in with another, to keep him from getting re-injured.

good luck,
brian

the vet recommended for us to get some stuff made by band aid for our chickens. it takes the place of saline wash and has something that kind of numbs the pain. you can find it where the saline wash would be. ours is in a clear bottle and wasn't very expensive.

The bath is a great idea, ducks seem to really perk up in water. Poor guy.

Also, I appreciate loveourbirds' ideas and at the same time want to mention that I have read that ducks ought not to have products with pain numbing agents (things that end in -caine, for example).

Did the vet mention anything like that when suggesting the product for the chickens? Perhaps there has been a new development, or perhaps that is a difference between chickens and waterfowl.

Geez, there is so much to learn.

I've also always been told not to give anything ending in 'caine" to waterfowl too. Many medications that are okay for chickens are not okay for waterfowl.

Is your drakes wing gone, or only the feathers gone?

Saddly I would call a vet but no vet who take ducks, and I would take him to the zoo but I would not be able to take him back home with me..

Crappy pictures sorry taken by my phone can't find camera charger

Okay, I've never dealt with a lost wing, but a few years ago I had a bald eagle attack one of my ducks and rip out most of the area around where the wing connects to the chest and also where the leg attaches to the body. The eagle ripped out muscle from the leg. It was awful. This is what I did:
First I trimmed feathers that wanted to stick in the wounds, once a day I cleaned the wounds, put triple antibiotic ointment on them (without pain reliever), covered with gauze and then used vet wrap to keep the gauze in place. I kept the duck crated on clean bedding with access to clean drinking water at all times. Once I started seeing healing, and no sign of infection, I stopped with the ointment and started leaving everything open to the air and let him bathe himself every couple of days. I would have let him out of the crate once there was a nice healthy scab, but I waited for him to walk better first.

I hope someone with more knowledge comes along.

Edited to add, I did not slather the ointment on, just a thin coating.

And I can't believe I didn't say this before. Post this in the duck forums, it won't get moved... or at least they didn't use to move them... There are a lot of knowledgeable duck folks there.
