I just went out to check on my hens and all three of them are always-always-always on their roost at this time of night. It's 9:30 pm and dark, obviously. My big BO, Clementine, was laying below the roost on top of the poop - totally not like her. She was sitting normally with her head upright and she was cooing at me when I shined the flashlight at her. I got nervous and pulled her out and held her. She seemed fine in the pitch dark with my flashlight, but it's hard to tell. I put her back in there and she just stood below the roost looking up at the 2 other chickens.
The only difference in her world is that yesterday we nailed a piece of wood over their other roost/perch window area (hard to explain) to keep out the draft since the low was 39. It's an open coop since we live in FL.
Should I go back out and check on her? I've never seen a hen NOT on the roost at night... thoughts??? I'm worried.
ETA - she was not in the nest boxes and clearly not on an egg. She was in the poop - an area I've never seen one lay.
