Hi, one of my hens, Ann, has been acting strange. Yesterday I looked out in the run and saw her laying down, I watched her a bit more, and she would get up, hold her tail down, then lay back down. She is typically quite skittish, so I walked over to her but she didn’t move. I was thinking she was egg bound but I checked in her vent and there wasn’t an egg. I’m gonna check her again to see if she does have an egg stuck, but if she doesn’t, do you have any ideas on what she’s got going on?? Thanks.

Have you checked her crop to see that it emptied this morning? Impacted Crop can cause her symptoms as well, but it's worth starting with the easiest things to rule out first.

Here are some questions that will help folks help you on BYC:

How old is she?
Does she normally lay?
What is her diet?
Does she get treats; if so, how often and what is given?
Is she eating/drinking now?
Does she free range?
What does her stool look like? Photo(s)?
What sort of heat have you been having where you're located?
Has she been de-wormed recently/ever?
How is the rest of the flock doing?

She’s around six months old.

I think she is laying but I’m not sure. I haven’t seen her on the nesting box. But I can’t really go off of just that.

She eats All-Flock with grass forage and some things from my garden.

She gets treats quite a bit, but the treats are things like oatmeal, sunflower seeds and tomatoes.

She is not eating or drinking right now.

She isn’t free range, but she has access to grass in an enclosed area.

I have not seen her poo yet, so I can’t tell on this one.

It has been hot, but it’s cooling off, I’d say it’s Upper eighties to Lower nineties, but she’s used to this heat. It’s more humid than hot.

She has never been wormed, but I’m going to give her some DE in case.

Everyone else is doing just fine.

DE does not deworm. Do you provide oyster shells always?
