I have a 1 year old buff orp hen who was completely fine Saturday. I left town and left them in the care of my husband. Got back tonight to find my favorite girly making a loud wheezing/rasping sound both breathing in and out. She looks good otherwise but seems a bit slow. She seems winded. No other signs of illnes that I can see. She is eating and drinking and scratching around in the yard. She did get into rhubarb leaves about a week ago but the others did as well and they all seem fine. Her breathing is loud enough that I can hear her a couple of feet away
Any help appreciated
thanks

I know we arent supposed to bump stuff up I really need help please. My hen has labored raspy breathing and I dont know what to do. Can anyone help? Need to know where to start to help her get better

I had a hen that did this and I treated her for gape worm. A conclusion I came to after I put a qtip down her throat and it came back with red stringy things on it. I just went to the feed store and got some ivermectin which cost me all of 6 bucks and put a bit (pea sized) on a qtip which I very gently wiped her throat with. If the qtip idea is a bit much for you just put some in her mouth and she'll swallow it. You will want to not eat her eggs for a week, but other than that it's pretty straight forward. Mine sprang back overnight. Good luck!

I had this happen to my favorite ameraucana hen. (Well EE). Anyhow, she was fine one minute and wheezy the next, very still and all puffed up. So I took her into my basement in a cage, put duramayacin and vitamins/electrolites on her, plus I ran a vicks vaporizer on her......she recovered nicely, and truthfully, I though she might die there for a while.

Sounds ridiculous, I know....running a vicks vaporizer on a chicken, but it worked great! And I still have my favorite little girl, Shirley!

Good luck to you!

Thanks for the replies. I swabbed her throat and came up with nothing other than a seriously annoyed hen so decided to try duramyacin from the feed store. The guy there didnt know anything about chickens but I figure tetracycline will fix dang near anything so I added 1/2 oz to a gallon of water for her. hope it does the trick since she is my favorite hen. Thanks for the replies
