So I jokingly suggested to my class of four that we should do a group project of building an incubator and incubating some eggs. My teacher also has a biology class and you know they have to study the development of an embryo. What better way to do that than a hands on experience of candling an egg?! We could also use this to study genetics and how offspring inherit traits from their parents blah blah. I think this would be a fun hands on experience for all of the classes. Once the chicks hatch, they would stay at the school for only a couple of days before they would be brought home where their development could still be followed through pictures and videos etc. thoughts? Pros? Cons? I dunno. This just sounded really fun and could have some real educational value.

It sounds like a great idea for me! I know we raised chicks in like second grade? I think so I don’t see why it couldn’t work for you too! Only issue I guess would be with this Corona stuff you might being hybrid type system and be on campus less? Which means less watching the eggs if something went wrong? Idk. But it seems like a great idea to me. Did she say she was against it or?

Honestly, unless one of you will take on the responsibility of the chicks (that mean everything), I don’t think it’s a good idea.

However, if one of you have the space, resources, time, etc. - I think it might work.

It’s something that won’t be free and has expenses and maintenance.

Maybe if it’s a group project you guys can make a commitment to do certain parts together (building coops, predator proofing, etc.)

Good luck.

I’d agree with this... maybe the teacher doesn’t want to take on all the responsibility for all of this. Animals need a home after they hatch plus they have certain housing requirements and such.

This is a wonderful idea! My daughters class did this in kindergarten many years ago. I remember they were all so excited about it. Of course at that age it was just the fun of seeing a the chicks hatch. They were studying dinosaurs at the time and the teacher was able to discuss how chickens are descended from dinosaur so that was cool! At your grade level of course you can make it much more involved. Love the idea of the genetics. Agree with other posters that you have to make sure you have homes for any chicks that hatch! Good luck and hope it all works out for you!😊

I would be taking them since the eggs would be from my flock anyways. There are people here every day (on an alternating schedule). And that’s something I thought of. I already have everything for raising chicks (save an incubator) from raising several groups of birds. I would be providing feed and the other supplies. Since this would be my suggestion, I would be taking full responsibility unless the other dude in my class wants to as well.
