Help me figure out this movie!!

I thought it was called "Beauty and the Beast" but when I googled it I couldn't find it. It has real people, I think it's set in New York, there's a brunette girl, and a furry lion looking guy who lives underground or something of the sort.
The lion looking guy looks like Jim Morrison, just the face. I remember watching it when I was real little (in the 90's I believe) and I never understood it exactly.

I'm just having one of those "I must figure it out!" moments.
