Help me figure out what killed this hen.......GRAPHIC PICS!!!!!

Yes, I think most all birds of prey kill alike! I were shocked to had read that vultures do the same thing! I suppose that there's not very many larger wild birds that do not kill their food! Glad to hear that they'll be safe for a while! It's sad to lose an animal to another!

It'd be worth a try if all of us would come together and fight for our poultry's rights! I'd think we'd win with as many losses to wild life. They've been protected for to long now and are more than plentiful out there! Just my thoughts, would anyone care to join me?!

I think it was a hawk. So sorry you lost your hen

We lost a couple chickens and a guinea this year too. Several months apart though. We did not find any carnage like this. Just a few feathers we think are from one chicken. Don't know how a hawk could have carried off a big bird. Coons usually eat on the spot I think. We are guessing a fox or coyote got ours and hauled it off. Our dogs didn't even find any evidence, and they patrol regularly. Still a mystery here. So sorry about your chicken. You get so attached and nothing deserves to die like that.

I noticed hawks did much less damage to my birds. perhaps I had smaller hawks, but there was no supervision as I was away in another state, and when I came back it was just chickens with the lungs and neck eaten. not torn into the ribcage like that or splayed open. Perhaps you have a baby chupacabra

So sorry about your hen. I actually walked up as a hawk was eating one of my poor hens, and it looked just like your pic except for the head.

So am I correct in thinking the hawk wouldn't/couldn't remove her head, and eat it?

NO a Hawk WILL take the head off and rip the chest open! Had it happen to one of my hens last year, neighbors witnessed it but by the time they realized it was one of my birds and not a wild bird it was tooo late, never did find her head

Hi Willa, that's definitely the work of a hawk. I lost a Golden Comet to one yesterday, and the damage is almost identical. It's heartbreaking. Sorry for your loss.
