Rest assured, I have figured it out...... young lokoing but not too young. not a "big famous" actor, small rolls not in anything recently, red hair and pale blue eyes...... it's go to be him!

Alan Tudyk? He was in the series Firefly and the movie Serenity. Plus, I think he was also in Dollhouse, V and an old episode of Frasier. That was my first thought, since you mentioned sci-fi. He does have a very distinctive voice, too.
