I have a beautiful little silky pullet who is about 6 months old. For the last two weeks she has been sleeping a lot and being anti-social. A week ago I brought her in to start giving her things to try to get her perked up. She's not worse and she's not any better. She won't eat. She won't drink. The only thing I'm getting in her is the vitamins, etc, etc. I think I'm losing her. I haven't called a vet b/c I wouldn't know who to call around here for this. But that's it. There are no other symptoms to give me any clue what is going on. It's like she's just stopped wanting to live but she's got enough gumption to try to fight me each day when I'm forcing stuff down her. I just don't know what to do but I am so upset b/c she's my favorite silky. :(

Check her our very well as she may have a severe mite of lice infestation that is lowering her red cell count and iron levels making her weak and lethargic if there r no other signs like runny watery eyes or sneezing or coughing then that might be what is going on. U should be able to check the crest and face area and also under the wings and they will b tiny bugs crawling all over her and don't worry u cant catch them if that's what it is but u will need to treat her for them and maybe try a product called red cell as a supplement to give her an extra boost to recover. Also u can contact your local vet and ask them for a refference to the nearest avian vet and then call them to make sure they see poultry, mine does. Also if she is eating a little try medicated gamebird starter or flight developer thats about 28 to 30% protien as this should help her put weight back on and she will get more from a small amount of that then regular chicken food but make sure she is also getting plenty of fluids. She may also have intestinal parisites so u may try worming her and see if that helps her to perk up. Good luck and I hope this helps.

Update is that I did bathe Brownie for mites and lice. She looked like she might have some but not really many.
I've continued on giving her what I've been giving her.
No real change but she's a little more active and today I saw her pick at the food and I gave her an egg which she picked at.
By picked at I mean I'm still not seeing her eat really anything and although she is alert she's sleeping a LOT and not eating like a chicken should.

I have not found red cell yet but looking.

Update tonight on my little hen: I gave her an egg today and she was interested in that. I got home tonight and I gave her another one. It's the only thing she'll eat!
I then opened another egg and mixed it with a little chick food. I'm hoping that she's getting better.

How soon should I dust her again for the mites??
