Hello dog enthusiasts of BYC!
I understand that pretty much any dog can be trained to be around chickens. However, I’m looking for a dog that wouldn’t give me too much difficulty with being around chickens that also matches my lifestyle and aesthetic preferences. So, if anyone knows of a dog breed with:

-smaller prey drive
-short hair
-healthy and active

Please let me know! I currently have a family bichon frise/ cavalier mix, and it was pretty easy to train him to leave the chickens alone. (He’s a mix of two lower prey drive/people friendly breeds). The only issue is, he’s somewhat high maintenance because of his longer coat. Also, he will probably become my parents dog when I move out of the house, which is why I’m considering my own future dog.

I considered beagles but found out they have somewhat of a high prey drive. I considered vizlas but they have lots of health problems? Im Somewhat at a loss for ideas now. Any ideas?

I haven’t heard of viszlas having lots of health problems before but they do have high prey drive as well and extremely high energy so might not be the best fit anyway.

Wow. It seems like almost all the dogs ever have high prey drives 😅 and all the low prey drive ones have long hair and imo look ugly 🥲

I’m ok with a higher energy dog. I just don’t want one that would snatch a chicken when I’m not there.
