Before anyone jumps me for the enclosure, my hubby is building a duck aviary this Thursday using poultry netting. I know that chain link isn't safe. As a side note I will post pics this week when it's finished. Hopefully it turns out really great.

Okay so I bought this duck yesterday and I was wondering what breed of duck it is. I think it looks like a khaki campbell but I was told this duck was a male and I noticed male khaki campbells have a different color head than this one. I'm not sure of the age. Also I didn't notice the curled drake feathers and I'm new to ducks so I'm not sure how to vocally tell a male and female apart either. So I guess I have 2 questions. What breed is it and does it look like a male? I need to get it a companion pronto and I would like to stick with the same breed if possible. Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the Duck Forum!

There may be a restriction on posting photo's until you have made X number of posts. (added . . . I wrote this because I could not see pics. They are up now)

Not to worry! You can answer a few questions as they come in.

So, poultry netting. We have been having a conversation about how there are different terms for materials used to protect ducks. Could you describe what the poultry netting looks like and is made of? How you fasten it?

I think Khaki Campbell mix, maybe.

Looks like a khaki campbell to me but i could be wrong. maybe its a mix? The beak looks like one of a male khaki campbell's.

Thanks everyone. My hubby is placing treated posts and basically fencing in a large area. Then he is going to build a "duck house" and place it inside. The ducks will be able to roam free through the day time and will be placed inside the duck house at night. I took a couple pics of the netting I'm using. It's like a hard plastic I believe.

Going by the duck voice sexing link I for sure have a male.

Also his beak was mentioned. I should have noted under the photos, that his beak has a really unique looking color. It's a blue green color...very beautiful.

Not trying to spend your money,

but having lived through the recent loss of a friend's entire small flock because raccoons tore through the plastic "hardware cloth," I am concerned that the plastic fence is not going to protect your beautiful boy.

Thanks so much for the heads up. :) We will probably still go ahead and build it with the netting since we will be putting the ducks up at night. If it becomes a problem we will have to go back and reinforce with chicken wire.

Okay so I just read the thread "hardware cloth what it is and isn't" and I called my husband at work. He said to take it back and exchange it for the wire mesh. Even if the ducks are put up at night we don't want to have to go back and repair so much hard work. So we are going to do it right the first time. Thanks Amiga for the advice! I will get pics up by this weekend. We are starting on Thursday.
