I'm brand new to chickens. I pick them up in a few days. The person is giving them to me, because they have been eating their eggs. My hubby came up with a design for the hen house that after the hens lay the eggs, they roll back and out into a rain gutter. The hens won't have much of a chance to eat the eggs.
I am planning to make my own hen feed.
How much does a laying hen eat per day. I live in Utah (Salt Lake Area) and we have cold winters (low of-10F), snow, and hot summers (high of 110F). It's January right now. I'm just wanting to make sure I feed them enough. We planned to keep about 16 chickens in a 4X8 hen house, but now I read that isn't enough. I may have to slaughter more and freeze them. I'm being given 22 chickens...and I can't keep that many in my yard. The hens will be allowed to run around in my backyard, and I will provide a run for them (that is roofed). I think I probably should give them grasshoppers or meal worms...I'm, assumming that is okay.
Any advice for a newbie?
Also, does anyone know about a method of processing the hens, using poultry shears to clean it? I read about it, but I do much better with a visual. I cannot seem to find anything on youtube.
If you have ideas, or websites to help me, please send them my way!
Thank you so much! I love this website/blog!
