We adopted several hens from another family and have named all except this one (they did not previously have names). She is a beautiful, very light blond Buff Orpington. Very stately, graceful and calm. In the little flock of six that we adopted, she was top hen. She reminds me of a tall, snow-capped mountain. Given that the family where she previously lived was from Switzerland, I would like to name her for a mountain or glacier, or perhaps an alpine lake. I looked up some names of Swiss mountains and lakes but nothing sounded particularly inspiring. Any ideas for appropriate Swiss or non-Swiss names? Something snow-related might be nice... Not Snowflake or Snow White or Icicle though :)

There's some great ideas in there, thanks, everyone!

We already have a Heidi, the RIR girl on the right in the photo below. We named her Heidi because A) It was the first Swiss name that came to mind for me, and B) She was always hiding behind other hens when we first got her :)

I kind of like the name Lena, both for the lakes in Washington and the long, cold river in Siberia. And, it's a very common Russian name, short for Yelena.

I also like where honanbm was going with Aurora and Nova... Maybe not specifically these names, but something related to stars or celestial phenomena... The catch for us is that we give all our chickens both English names and Russian names so whatever name we choose has to sound good in both languages or in translation.
