I have 2 Plymouth Barred Rocks, they are just about 4 months old. They both look very similar. Can someone tell me if I have hens or roosters. My family and I are really hoping they are hens!
Thanks in advance!

I really hope you are right! Out of 6 chickens, I've been told 4 (2 Silkies, 2 Buff Orpingtons) are roos.

Really! My buff orpingtons are the same age. The "rooster looking" one is the biggest of the flock. One of our silkies (darker one) woke us up with 'his" crowing about two days ago but hasn't done it again. I will stay hopeful that the smaller buff is a SHE! Thanks! I'll keep you posted.

If your orps are the same age, only one looks like a rooster to me. The one on the right
Silkies....I can't tell until they crow or lay an egg, and even then I'm not always rigtht!!!

Wait out on that orp, though, because my one looked like that at 4 months and the other one looked like your other one, and they are both hens for sure. They are laying eggs now.

Your barred rocks are pullets.

The buff orp on the right I can see being a cockeral, esp with that shading on the wings. I'm not seeing anything rooish about the other one, but throw a pic up and let us have a look.

I don't even try to sex silkies. As far as I'm concerned, it's crow or egg with them lol.

Agreed except silkies usually the males will have a large comb where the girls are almost non existent. The male looks like his hair is somewhat combed back, the female has a beaufont.
