Help Me With Eggs!!!!

thanks for all the help everyone!!

Is there a relation between whether the hen is laying and goes broody or whether her eggs are fertile and she goes broody? For example if you only have hens and she has never been introduced to a rooster CAN she still go broody?

Absolutely, she can go broody without ever seeing a rooster! Read #2 post on broody... a broody will sit on golf balls, ice cubes, etc. Nothing fertile about those items. Going broody is written into her DNA - some breeds more than others.

I got my first flock this past May. A scientist lady gave them to me when she lost her government grant money. Well, she gave me 7 of her 600. Anywho, I brought them home to my new farm that I had just moved into. One of the 7 was a Roo that was much younger than the hens, and had not begun 'acting' like a roo. One of the hens was broody from the first day. I was learning all over again how to care for chickens. They were allowed to free-range for the first month until I got annoyed with poo all over hte place. So one day I noticed one of my Delawares missing. I also noticed egg production had decreased dramatically. After about a week, I was in the hay barn with a pitchfork, clearing out old hay. I heard a "cluck, cluck". I looked behind an old bale of hay and saw my missing girl sitting on top of 13 eggs. I picked her up (with some effort) and moved her back to the coop. I collected all the eggs. She was bound and determined to get back to that spot, even though there was nothing there anymore. Hubby finished fencing in a chicken run, and she finally gave it up. Believe me, you'll know broody when you see it (or feel it). LOL!

What's really weird is when you have a broody rooster! I know I know - it's not supposed to be that way. But I swear - we have found this roo sitting on eggs in the nest - and he will fight you for the eggs!

This is the roo after I took the eggs from the nest. He jumped right back up in the nest...
