All I can find is "play sand" or "tube sand" (which my husband tells me is the same as play sand, but in a convenient tube).

I can't find coarse or construction sand anywhere. I've checked Menards, Farm & Fleet, Home Depot and Lowes.

Do I want "leveling sand"? "Pool filter sand"? "Paver base sand"?

For what? A run? It makes no difference? If you are looking to level for foundation then you want leveling sand...otherwise anything works in the run. I've used play sand, all-purpose sand, quiksand - it s all the same.

Construction sounds a bit too coarse though. My birds dustbathe in it, and it sounds pretty rough. Not sure they would like that.

My experience with tube sand is that it is more coarse than play sand. I prefer the sand that is more coarse in the run. I find that it's plenty dusty for them to enjoy a "bath" and I like the grit. In my area (NE Ohio), I find the coarse sand drains better. Construction, tube, all purpose...they are all pretty much the same. Its only the "play" that is very fine.

I used river sand from the landscaping company. It is coarser than what you think of when you think of sand. It was $35 a yard, so much cheaper. The chickens seem to enjoy it and take dust baths in it. For the most part, sand is sand. I would go with the cheap stuff.

I just shovel it into the run, and let the chickens level it for me.
