What part of the country are you in? How old are the birds? How big is the coop? A few more details will get you better answers. This forum is very helpful. I'm sure we can get you the answers you're looking for.

Welcome to BYC!

First off, you don't want to keep just one hen with a rooster. He can mate her to death. So if you want to keep a rooster, and you don't need to if you only want eggs, you will need to get this rooster more hens. 7 to 12 hens. This will give the hens a break from his mating and keep the hens in good shape.

You might want to do some reading in our learning center here on BYC for some tips and hints in keeping your flock, building the coop and keeping your birds safe...

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! TwoCrows gave you some good advice, good luck in your chicken projects!

Welcome to BYC. If juvenile they may still need heat depending upon where you live. If adult provide a roost and clean, dry, draft free conditions and they will be fine.
