Diatomaceous Earth or DE is deadly to insects but friendly to people and animals as long as they don't breathe a lot of it as it is hard on the lungs. I use it on my birds, around the house for roaches and it totally controls bedbugs. If you get the mites in your hair while caring for the birds, you can dust it there, too. Sevin dust is also good to dust their feathers and nests without harm but it's a chemical.
