Please help! I have 6 free range hens that were given to me as chicks and have now started laying. We also have a cockeral. A week ago one of the hens went missing. We found her laying on a next of 6 eggs (obviously missed those!) She had been sitting for about 1 week and today I went to see her and she was with the others. On checking the nest, all the eggs were gone. I am so upset, but more upset for the chicken. Will this effect her badly? What can I do.
I suspect a snake ( I live in Greece) and I not sure how I can prevent this happening again. I don't really want to fence them all in.... I am a total novice to all this.
Thanks!

While you don't have to fence them all in you may have to fence her in. If you find her brooding you can move her at dusk or dark to a special nestbox with privacy and safe place.
Where in Greece do you live? I've been and it's very beautiful, though I would have liked to spend more time in Mykonos.

thanks for replying...I have just found her sitting on her empty nest looking quite forelorn...will she get over it? I am not sure what the culprit was.
I live on Zakynthos, beautiful but hot at the moment!

You could give her more eggs and then wait until night- put her in a safe place with food and water and room to get off the nest to poo, and let her out for an hour daily to stretch her legs.

I know they can get over it, but it's so sad!!

Thanks for the advice everyone, I will see how she is tomorrow.....never thought I would become this attached!!
