Hi. I need some answers.
I have a 3 year old rhode island red hen.
It has been at least 2 days now with a problem.
Yesterday I found her laying down in an open box on her side with her foot sticking out strangely. She didn't try to move when I approched her which she would usually run away. I picked her up and stood her up. She acted like one of her legs wouldn't hold her but we got her to stand for a few minutes. But she wouldn't eat or drink and her head kept on twitching (like when a dog shakes their head). Her one eye also wouldn't open. I also noticed that her comb looked faded (instead of red it is pale pink).
She layed in the box all night and did not roost like she usually does. Today she can't stand at all and both eyes were closed most of the time and her head is still twitching. I was able to feed her some worms when I showed them to her on the side of her head where her eye is open and she drank a little. Her poo is runny. When I feel under her body her chest plate (in the middle of her body) feels a little like it is pushing forward (not sure if this is normal except my other chicken doesn't feel this protruding).
She also has not layed eggs since we got her at least a year ago.
My one other chicken shows no signs.
I don't know any causes/trauma. I don't see any outward signs (no blood or wounds, no mites that I see, no puss around the eyes) We have been having problems with mice and rats getting into the feed and hay.
I would like to treat it myself if possible. We don't have any vets in the area that see chickens.
Thank you for any help you can give. These are my first chickens.
