HELP!! MY chicken swallowed glass pieces and I removed it by sliting her crop and removing it will s

My chicken is about 4 years old she's a barred Plymouth rock and in generally good health. The day before yesterday she swallowed a pieces of glass, I slit her crop open and removed all the pieces of glass or so I thought. Right now she's fine but I can still feel a few pieces of glass in her crop most of them are small but one is larger it's not as long as the piece I removed but, I worried should I go back in later and remove it or give her some granite grit and let it grind down? I'm worried that it might puncture her lining, but I've been reading the Internet and a lot of websites seem to think that they will either grind it down or it will stay inside but not cause any harm. Opinions?, suggestions?, similar experiences? all will be appreciated!!

Also second when I cut her open the cuts were made vertically one on top of the other and I closed the crop hole with a little crazy glue, because I didn't have any suitable thread at the time ( Yes, I know Crazy glue, but doctors use a very similar product in human called dermabond, I'm a nursing student) anyway the crop layer is closed but I didn't close the very top layer of skin [the one that is like a thin film] is this a problem?
The crop and top layer of skin appeared to have adhered together is this very bad? what are the possible complications? Do I really need to separate the layer by re-cutting to separate them if they have adhered? how would I do that??

p.s if anyone is wondering she's doing fine, it's 2 days post no signs of infection, doesn't seem to be in pain, appetite is great even though I'm keeping her on about 6 very small meals a day.

I have done a couple surgeries for crop impaction. The skin will typically heal. Sometimes they will adhear and that can be an issue... something they can get baggy crops from the surgery but not always... not sure on the rest of the glass passing... chickens do seem to get into anything. The worry would be that as it passed it could cut her intestines and lead to an infection in her abdominal cavity.... good luck with your girl and your studies... ( I have been an RN for 10 years now)

Crazy glue sounds appripo. Glass, broken glass, sharp glass, does not hurt chickens. Just like rocks, oyster shells, tacks, nails, or any other number of sharp objects. Cutting open their crop, may cause death.

I have no idea how I saw this post but I had to join and respond. REALLY no other old folks that know this about chickens??

I'll ask my kids tomorow but I know this was common knowledge when we raised chickens outside and butchered them for food. I can not think of anyone I knew when I was a child that didn't know this. Wow, ask your grandparents.

Since the majority of folks in my generation and my daughter's generation have become far removed from farm life, or even seeing where our food comes from, you shouldn't be too surprised that many folks have not much idea about what chickens may swallow. I bet most non-poultry people don't have the faintest idea idea of what the insides if a chicken even looks like, since they buy Purdue chickens, already butchered, plucked, and dressed. Sometimes even seasoned.

Even I myself, who specialized in ornithology, have dissected many birds, rescued and/ or rehabbed countless others, became alarmed a moment ago when my favorite BR hen swallowed a pea- sized bit of glass. I just imagined it slicing her up on the way through her digestive tract. I'll give her some coarser gravel to hopefully sand down those edges!

Not to discourage you, but birds especially will not show obvious signs of pain or illness until it is nearly impossible to hide it. It is the survival instinct... Any bird that shows weakness is vulnerable to attack, from predators to ( especially chickens..) their own flock mates. So, just because you don't notice pain, doesn't mean she doesn't feel it. Imagine yourself undergoing what she did.. Would you hurt 2 days later? Probably. I just call my vet, explain the situation, and ask for some pain meds for my hen.

Hope you've kept her separate for a while until she heals. Her friends will peck at any wound they find .
