Just picked up day old jersey giant chicks, arrived in the mail at my local chicken store today. They are scratching themselves like crazy. What could be causing this?

Well, mine do this a lot too. I read it has to do with them itching cause new feather growth/ pulling out the down for the new feather growth. But I would just scoop one up a look through their down to be sure there isnt anything creepin' in there like mites or lice that is bothering. Better to be safe than sorry, right? lol Although, I really don't think its anything like that. Just normal behavior for them!

Mine do the same thing... I've dusted them three times with Sevin but they still do it... I haven't seen any bugs..... Even at night.... I itch when I go out and get in coop, something with the pine shavings....mine are older but I made them a dust bath...

They were in pine shavings at the store and under the paper towels it is pine shavings. I wonder. I've never seen chicks itch so much.

Removed the shavings and replaced with just paper towels. It took 24 hours but they stopped itching. I'll keep to paper towels for a week and then switch to sand. The pine was irritating them. Thank you all for the help :)
