I have 5 Coturnix. Turns out to be 2 roos, 3 hens. I naturally separated the two boys- they fight constantly. But neither roo likes my one white female. (The other two are "goldens".) The larger male chased her, prevented her from eating, cornering her all day. Whenever she moved, "pow!" He'd attack. So I put her in with the other, smaller male, who I assumed would be happy to have a girl all to himself. He also immediately attacked her. (No it wasn't courting. So I put her back in the larger cage again.
Well, yesterday afternoon I found Marshmallow (the white one) with a very bloody head... the male had attacked her viciously- nearly blinding her in the right eye.
So now I have 3 cages for 5 quail! Seems a bit much to me.
Has anyone heard of "racial prejudice" in quail? Seems like both males prefer the brown girls over the white girl. WHAT CAN I DO?!?
My main quail run is 2 ftW x 4 ftL x 2ft H. Hiding box (all of them LOVE it!), sand box, food and water at all times. Solid bottom. I give them fresh veggies as well as the crumble feed.
I am totally perplexed.
