Hi all,

I need help.

I have a small backyard flock [~ 5 months old] and this morning I got my first egg!

I have a blue Ameraucana [not EE] cockerel in with the girls and I've seen him mount the girls.

What are the chances this first egg could be fertilized??? I have to re-home the cockerel in a week and so I won't have any chance of a fertile egg ever again and I kind of want to incubate it.

Am I nuts? Could a chick hatch?

The hen is either a PR or BA. It's pale brown/pink so I know it's not the blue Ameraucana hens.

Thank you so much! I have to decide quickly!

Hard to say which eggs are fertilized. the only way to find out if you decided to incubate the eggs, and wait until the sixth day to see if you got any veining. I have a rooster with 8 hens and he wont mate half of it, right now I have a broody hen and hope I will have a surprised later !

If the roo serviced the hens there is a pretty good chance that the egg would be fertile. I've heard hatching a hen's first eggs is not a good idea and you should wait until she lays a few more eggs. But I've also heard that after being serviced a hen will lay fertile eggs for up to 2 weeks, so you should be getting a few more fertile eggs over the next few weeks that you can incubate.

Thank you, all.
Great information!

I think I will keep it and incubate it. In about 8-10 days I'll candle it and see!

So does anyone know what it might look like [if it hatched]? ;)

Cockerel is a pure blue Ameraucana [not EE].
Pullet that laid it is either an Australorp, Barred Rock, or a black silkie! Sheesh. My own accidental Easter Egger!

Thanks!!

I dont have that mixed breed , but it will be interesting to see how they look ! I have a Half silkie and australorp and she is soo cute ! Father is Buff silkie mom australorp.

She's beautiful! I love the golden feathers against the black. And the hair do! Gorgeous. I'm kind of excited and hopeful.
Thanks for the cool picture! I'm sure others will love it too. :)
