How did you raise your hens to let you pick them up. None of my chickens will let you pick them up, but some will tolerate it, others flap around. 80% of them are not skittish and actually follow me around, but as soon as I reach for them they run away.Chickens each have their own personalities. You can raise a hatch and treat all the chicks the same way, yet you soon see those who are shy, those who are curious, those who outgoing, and those who are standoffish or mean. It's part of the joy of raising chickens to see those little personalities develop and developing bonds with certain ones.
Early on I try to train all my chickens (hens in particular) to get used to being handled, yet sometimes I get one that just never comes around. For example, I have a sweet little Chocolate Orpington who is about six weeks old. Her hatchmates love being handled and cuddled, but she totally freaks out if she is handled. Even mealworm bribery doesn't work with her. lol That's just her personality. I hope she mellows a bit over time, but as long as she produces eggs in a few months, I will allow her her independence, and she'll have a place in my flock. I just won't pick her up unless I absolutely need to do so.
You seem to have a mean hen. As long as she isn't attacking you or anyone else unprovoked, or when she is not being handled, then she just needs her space. However, if she is aggressive and is a problem, then you have a choice to make.
Best of luck!![]()
