My sweet Peggy has/had a broken egg inside her. I came home and found her laying on the ground. I put her in a soak and some egg shell came out. I lubed her vent and got more some more shell out. I did a flush also. I started her on antibiotics. She was lethargic but she has eaten some tums and scrambled eggs. I don’t know if all the shells are out and what else I can do for her? She doesn’t seem to have a prolapse as far as I can tell! I appreciate any help and advice! We do not have any avian vets nearby

Hi,

If you can, get some Calcium Citrate +D and give her one of those. One per day for a few days, up to a week. Around 300-400 mgs, just open her beak and pop it in.

The Tums might help, but the Calcium Citrate is much more concentrated. It will cause contractions so she can expel what's inside her reproductive tract.

I have had one unusual case of a silkie hen running around the yard with a broken egg hanging from her vent. She was eating watermelon like it was going out of style. I couldn't catch her as she's one of my first old hens and always a witch. That night, when they went to the coop, I pulled her out to look her over, and it was gone. The next day, there she was again out in the yard like usual. I never had to do a thing. That was about a year ago, and she's still here, and still a witch.

Case in point, if she gets it all out, she should be okay.
