Please help I am a new member. My hand is like my dog. Are used to have a lot of chickens and I had to move but my chicken Sammy has been with me since she was a baby and we are Inseparable. This morning I noticed on top of her back beneath her to wings on her back there’s a big huge lump it almost looks like it is Oozes. There are light thin scabs almost greenish looking. I’m not sure what this could be? I don’t have a lot of money to take her to the vet. Does anybody have any idea what this could be that can help me please. She stays in at night so she’s not exposed to the weather anymore she’s about five years old. She is still eating. Thank you all so much please help

Welcome to BYC. It would be good to see any pictures that you have of Sammy’s lump. It is possible that she may have a feather cyst from an ingrown feather, a tumor, or possible an injury that has become abscessed. Does it feel soft or hard? Can you get some of the oozing matter on a tissue and tell us if it looks like pus or what color it is?

Thank you for answering. It’s actually kind of hard and the size of like a big gumbo. I don’t see anything losing out of it anywhere. I can try to get a picture when I can get somebody over here to help me hold her. I think you all though I’m really worried

Chicken pus is actually quite hard in nature. Is there a smell to that area? Scab + green points to injury of some kind. Chicken bruises are green.

Here is a picture of an infected oil gland at the base of this pullet’s tail. Is this what you are seeing? Or is the swelling in a different spot?

Thanks. It’s getting bigger. Yes it oozes.
