A couple years ago, one of my hens broke half her toenail off. I wasn't there when it happened, and by the time I saw it her nail had stopped bleeding, but her whole underside was covered with blood.

She wasn't moving around and was holding her foot up, plus it was cold outside, so I brought her in the house for the night. She was fine the next day.
