I posted in chicken behavior, and got no replies. Please, I need some advise. I have no experience with chickens. I bought three grown hens and a huge rooster at the auction about a month ago.
Yesterday Mr. Red wouldn't let me back in the pen to get my cleaning supplies! Thank goodness I had already fed and changed the water. Can somebody just tell me if a rooster can hurt me? I have to go back out there! Now, please?

Yes, a rooster can hurt you, especially if he has spurs. I think you have learned the reason why Mr. Red was at auction. Human aggressive roosters are not safe or pleasant to have around. It means he's learned to see humans as part of the pecking order. And once he decides to challenge you for dominance, he will never stop challenging for that dominance. You've already lost your first battle with him. If you rehome him, you'll just be passing this problem to the next person. If you want to keep him, it means radically changing your behavior around the flock. You'll need a complete change in attitude. You need to convince him that you are the one in charge and that you are not someone to be messed with. Stand tall, walk with purpose (and a big stick), and never turn your back to him.

Yes they can hurt you! There is a lot of information on this site about rooster behavior. Personally I have children that visit and would cull any rooster that attacked me.
Exactly what can they do? They don't have teeth to bite, I know they can peck, anything else? I've put thick jeans on and long sleeves with gloves. I think I'm ready. He caught me off guard yesterday! I was scared to death! Thank you for your reply.

Any rooster that attacks people is not a good rooster. Your rooster isn't protecting his hens from actual danger. He sees you as another chicken and he's reminding you that he's the one in charge. It's dominance. And it should never be tolerated. I've got lots of 3 mature roosters in my flock, and a bunch of cockerels. None have ever attacked a single human. And they do a great job of protecting the flock from the actual dangers of coyotes and hawks.

They jump, legs straight out. A well placed spur can cause serious injury, even piercing through thick clothing. If he can jump high enough, he can peck your face.

You wouldn't hit him with the stick, would you? I don't want to hurt him. But I will not let him hurt me!

How do o get him to stop
Stop letting him control you. Don't back off. Keep moving towards him. Don't stop moving towards him till he gives up the challenge and turns away and walks off. That's the body language for 'Okay, I give. Do what you need to do.'
Make it a point to always make him move out of your way, no matter what it is you are out there to do. And never turn your back to him.
