So sorry for your loss, even when you know they are becoming old, it doesn't make you feel any less hurt. Sometimes it hurts more because you have become so close to them after having them around for so long. Hope you start to feel better and hope your son is able to understand the cycle of life. Still doesn't make it any easier. Hard to have pets with sort of short life spans. My thoughts are with you and yours.
