Hello everyone, we just acquired a 4 month old goose from a friend of ours who could no longer keep it, and we're trying to determine the gender and breed. We have lots of chickens but geese are all new to us. From looking online, it looks like a Brown Chinese Goose, but African Geese look similar so I was hoping to find out for sure. Also, it doesn't have the huge knob so I figure that means either it's female, or it's still developing (not sure what age they're fully grown). Any help and/or goose tips would be much appreciated!

Geese are really wonderful birds but they really need a goose friend to be happy, do you plan on finding a friend for your new goose? as for sex I always refer to @jchny2000 when it comes to African or Chinese might still be too young for knob to be a way to tell. hopefully you'll get some help soon.

Thank you for your response. She (he) was raised with two chickens from birth and we adopted all three of them yesterday (they're behind her in the photo). They are attached at the hip! They stick together for sure and seem very happy together. We also have 4 Indian Runner ducks that are closer to her size and breed than the chickens are, so once everyone starts to get along and blends into the flock, we'll see how things go. I guess if she seems lonely or unhappy then we can always find her a goose friend :)

Well she maybe okay then if she has a little group already. Just know if your goose turns out to be a gander it will probably mate with your ducks, My lone gander was raised with Muscovy ducks one actually hatched him so he bonded and mated with them for 5 yrs then I brought in a female goose. Took him a while to realize he wasn't a duck but breeding season cinched the deal and now there are 4 in that goose family.

Quote: I think you have a gander, lovely fella too! Legs are thick, long neck. As far as breed, you have to wait a bit longer to be sure. Its rare to find a true african, yours may be chinese or African/chinese cross. It always difficult to be 100% sure this young but the signs are there. Knobs are not a sure way to tell, my fella Gee is over 3 now and his knob isn't very big either.
My Brown chinese gander:

Gee my white chinese

Close up another brown chinese. Notice the hen in background has a larger knob than this gander.
