Ok so I got some eggs from someone to put under a hen that is wanting to set. Out of 14 there is 9 left today another egg got broke , now they were do to start hatching Sunday, today I went out ,and another egg was broke, No chick inside, just ooie greyish black stuff.

Now the person said if she can not hatch eggs she may kill chicks if i stick one under her.
What was the blackish greyish ooie stuff, and is that why she is breaking them, and would she kill a chick if i get a couple to put under her? She sits on the eggs, she is on what is left right now, and comes down every so often to eat and drink...

I have only bought chicks so this is first time to try to hatch any

Odd not one of the eggs hatched. Having a bird go broody is usually the best incubator one can use. Were they shipped eggs?

I've had hens go broody and hatch but never did the adoption thing. From what I read the key is to slip the chicks under her at night while she's sleeping.

This is more of a bump for your question to get it back to top of board rather than informative. Some broody user will chime in. If not try posing your question with "broody adopting chicks question" or something to that end for title.

only one had a chick. the others did not. No I found someone not far from us that was going to stick in the incubater...

If you can find day old chicks, I'd sure try slipping some under her, if she's been brooding 3 weeks or so. I've had hens set on eggs that got broken, or for whatever reason their eggs didn't hatch and I grafted chicks to them, either from the feed store or I happened to have some in the incubator. haven't had a problem with the hen killing them at all, she's happy to have babies and get off that nest

. For a new momma, I would advise putting the chicks with her at night. that way they tuck up under her to stay warm and she has hours of the sensation of them under her body before she sees them.

I am no expert but I would say she knew the eggs were bad. In that they were not fertile and the egg went bad. I think your hen will be fine as far as being a mother.
