Hey everybody I might get 4-6\\2-year old chickens in a few weeks, but need coop ideas. Please help. I'm ok on tools but its money thats a little tight.

I just finished a small tractor/coop that would be ok for 3 chickens. I have pictures and a materials list on my BYC page. Take a look and see if it gives you some ideas you can use.

I love your coop. Bob looks very happy

I recently visited with a young lady that had 6 chickens and 2 ducks in a dog kennel with a large rectangular dog house for their shelter. Since they free range every day, this minimalist set-up seemed just fine. There are alot of gorgeous coops on BYC, but don't let that make you can't have chickens & keep them in a simple fashion. They need protection from the elements & from preditors.

Right now I'm still in the process of constructing my coop. I've taken the suggestion of some and have gone with using pallets. I have almost finished mine and so far it's only cost $7.65, of which was spent on fasteners. When using pallets you need to pay attention to the quality of the wood, if it's too lite you will break the boards when trying to dismantle them. Also, it can be time consuming. I took about 4-5 pallets apart in about a week, doing a little here and there. My goal is to do it as cheap and as green as possible. Keep an eye on craigslist for odds and ends you can use.

It's not unusual to find small storage bldg. on craigslist for free. If you have time that can be a great source. Even if it's larger and has to be dissasembled you can use the materials for your own design. Good Luck
