Help! Need help with Replacement Costs

Oct 28th Neighbors dog dug in, and out of our pheasant area and mauled all 3 chinese crested - I was mad as hell as I've had trouble with this guy for yrs, But my beau calmed me down and we let it slide.

And now , again Nov.28-29 this same neighbors dog found his was into the coop run, and house after I had let them out for the day-
Mauled, and killed 20 hens and roosters.

As follows: 9 Red sussex x layer hens - Just 5 mos old and laying
2 White pure silkie roosters
1 Black pure silkie hen
1 white pure silkie hen
1 Red pure silkie hen - Yes seems the silkies I got for my beau were almost wiped out- still have 3 - one of each color (1 roo)
1 pure La Fleche rooster, of course the more gorgeous one.
1 OE rooster-.
1 white layer hen
1 Buff layer hen (from SweetChicks- Blanche)
1 Banty x roo
1 Purebred Silver Seabright roo

I've listed them as sexed, if that's going to help in pricing at all.

May have to put down a tom bronze turkey too yet, as of this morn.
So, how do I figure out the costs to charge this guy,
besides the definate decrease in egg production? Breeding? Feed costs? Are all these taken into consideration?

We were up to a dozen, finally a day, as the Sussex are just laying now. At 5 mos old.
All the ones we lost were this years hatches except 2 older hens.

And i'm also charging for the 3 chinese crested pheasants too, this time. I bought them for $7.00 ea as day olds.

So- Please help us decide on an amount to charge him, and maybe he'll finally keep his 4 dogs in his own yard!

My beau and I are raising bronze turkeys,silkies(3 colors),La Fleche breed,a few OE, and red sussex x hens. I got him into poultry this year. And he's very understanding!
We also have a pr. of parrotlets,2 terrier x dogs (Ewok & Teddy),and a pr of horses presently, as well as a 55 gal tank of assort.moor & goldfish. Looking for a place to buy in Sask.

I would suggest:

initial cost of bird + cost to raise the bird to this point (all feed and medical cost) + loss of production until replacement stock is mature (eggs for consumption, fertile egg sales and chick sales) + eggs you're going to have to buy at the store for the next 6 months + cost of replacement stock + cost to raise replacement stock + property damage + any medical costs incurred

In our state all the above costs are considered reasonable and the offender would owe them to us. I don't know how it works in Can. I'm sorry about your losses and I hope your neighbor learns something valuable. Keep us posted.

While you are tallying up the costs, don't forget to include the damage to the coop/run that you will need to repair.

You might try putting in an insurance claim with your home owners policy. They are quite understanding and quite generous when they know they can collect the money back from the offender/dog owner. That way, you donʻt have to confront the guy since you will continue to live next door to him. It makes it all kind of impersonal and the insurance company will take the heat when your neighbor starts to complain about how much he owes.

Lastly, at least in the US, Animal Control will confiscate a dog that routinely injures or kills livestock. Some states will even prosecute the owner. Its a big stick to use, but better than a frying pan up side the head.

Um, before checking with your insurance company, be sure you are covered for livestock. Many home policies don't even cover buildings used for livestock without a special clause, or you may need farm insurance. If you make a claim then find out your building is not covered, the insurance company may pay a visit for on-site inspection. Be ultra-careful.

I'm so sorry about the loss of your birds and all the heartache it has brought.

Replacement cost is just that. Look on eggbid. I have had people call on the opposite end. Once they find out the price of laying hens raised from Pullorum-free hatcheries and vaccinated, They usually would rather cut a check for $ instead of adding a trip to pick them up. Be a good neighbor! Be fair. Things may work out. Either way next time the dog visits I would keep him!!!!

Here just starting to lay is $12- $14 for hens. I have a lady that bought 25 in spring that sells them for $5 a pound dressed.
