where chickens dare to tread..
Mods, if this is in the wrong place, I apologize.

A while back, I wrote on here about evil neighbors who were complaining our chickens were the cause of skunk smell in their yard. Now, the smell is sporadic, and it's stronger in their yard, not ours, so I doubt it's the hens. Someone on BYC mentioned the connection between white grubs (which skunks love) and lawn fertilizer.

The neighbor is manic about his lawn, and fertilized again this weekend. And this morning, once again there's skunk smell out there.

The neighbors aren't going to take my word for it. Does anyone have a well-referenced article on the web I can print out for them? I don't want to get blamed again. They are punishing us big-time.

Thanks in advance for any help!!

I'm sure the culprit is their artificial fertilizer - I can't stand the way it smells - and I complain to the big box stores every time I have to stand in line by a row of that yeach. I only use organics, specifically a product called Milorganite that's made out of beer sludge - best greener-upper in the world.

Do an extensive search on the internet - I'd even try places like Mother Earth News, etc. to see if they have any articles relating to artificial fertilizer and skunk smell. Hope someone on BYC can help you out!

When artificial fertilizer gets damp from the moisture over night it takes on a skunk like smell. If your neighbor would water in the fertilizer, this may solve the problem as it is disolved and mostly under ground. Some varieties of lime will have a strong smell. After this forget those neighbors as they are sure not neighborly.

Thanks, all. Unfortunately, the articles I've found aren't very "official". I'd rather find something from a .org that they'll be more impressed by. But I'll keep looking.

Trust me when I say that I don't want anything to do with them. But they are dangerous people. I try to stay on their good side (however small it might be.)
