Help! Need to get some weight back on hen thats been broody and sittin

Mrs. K :

ok, I may take some scrambled eggs down to my two, they are two days from hatching, and tonight, they were panting, and one's comb was pretty limp, I held water up to them, but they did not drink much.

But what I want to know about is the canola oil for the dog. We have a wonderful cowdog, that lives to work cattle with the cowboys. She is a goer, and she can and will cover the miles. And is as thin as a rail and we have her on the most expensive high energy dog food we can buy. Plus she gets quite a few eggs.

Her coat is dull, and she is thin. How much canola oil, and how often. Thanks Mrs.K

Ok, a thin dog I can help ya with, lol...the canola oil will also help with her coat. BUT, first off you need to realize, if you WORK a dog, they will be thin. I have hounds, and when I am hittin the woods 5-6 nights a week, you cannot keep weight on them. Have you ever seen an olympic track star? They are VERY thin, but are in top shape. Thin doesnt always mean starving or unhealthy. But, you might first consider worming her with drontal plus first, purchased through your vet. I dont know if you can get it online, but probably not. It gets EVERY kind of worm (except heart). Drontal, you give them two tablets, then repeat in two weeks. Then just a tbs of canola on their food say every day for three weeks, you can also put a dallop of plain ole yogurt on their food, (my dogs prefer strawberry yogurt) help with the digestion and get the bacteria in their stomach workin...you can also put a little bit of apple cider vinegar in their water, say 1/2 a cup per 4 gallons. (just a guesstimate) That will help with coat health. Giving them too high a protein, especially if they are working in this heat can hurt a dog...my best recommendation is ask around, find a good dog vet. Then ask them what food htey would recommend for a working dog like yours. I personally would recommend Purina Pro Plan, if you go that route the Salmon and Rice is super digestible and a dang good food....good luck

what does cross beak and cull mean?

Well, cross beak is when the beak, top or bottom, grows crooked. It can be caused by several different things. Do a search for cross beak on here, there are lots of pictures....and cull means different things to different people, culling just means "removing them from the gene pool". To some it means euthanasia, some people give them as pets, some eat them....

If you put food bye her you give her no reason to get up. Just WAIT and she will get up when shes hungry to eat and drink. You need to let nature run its course.

I've had 2 hens that have been broody. I take them off the nest at least once a day, in the morning, sometimes about 5 or 6pm. Put them by their feed and water, make sure they eat and drink a bit, then guide them out of the coop. Most of the time, they do a squawking running themselves out of the coop. Take a dirt bath, poop alot (those big stinky poops), run after the other chickens. After about 10 minutes, they do a squawking run back into the coop. They grab another few bites and hop back into the nest. In the afternoon, I'd take in a little scrambled eggs, yogurt, blueberries. Seems to have worked well for both the hens.
