We went out today and let them free range. We actually have 10 total in the flock and 8 are roosters after looking at them more closely and seeing the noticeable saddle feathers.
Unfortunately I am not for giving away my girls. They are sweet and sit on our laps. No eggs yet but we have had to separate them because they were overstressed with so many roosters. They are housed now with the one rooster, Pip who was obviously low on the pecking order. They get along well with him.
I am definitely NOT for killing them - it is absolutely against everything I believe and I absolutely LOVE animals. As far as re-homing them, you are correct, it is nearly impossible to find good home for 8 roosters. I live in an area that is zoned for farming so I would love to keep them, is that the best thing for them?
The largest, Chubs who seems to be the dominant roo, is very protective of the entire flock. He charged my 9-year old daughter today and that will be the quickest way for him to become soup. Hubby won't stand for that.
Hubby did say that next year we can get some more and we will buy pullets instead of getting from a straight run.
Any suggestions on housing and actually keeping so many roos? Will they fight?? And will they actually be happy? I am totally open to suggestions and welcome all feedback.
