Hi, weve got an egg partially hatched. I made the dumb mistake of tryin to help the chick since it was chirping like crazy, and now the membrane is bleeding a little. I think the yolk may have dried up. I need to know if I'm ok to go to bed with it in the incubator to dry out, or if need to keep the membrane moist. Please help me out. Thanks.

You absolutely need to keep it moist it will dry out. You could try wrapping it with paper towel but it will need to be kept moist and warm. Has the beak poked through already? And how much of the membrane is still intact? How much shell have you removed? Be careful not the cover the chicks beak as it is breathing air and he same goes for water. Wait for a few hours and see what happens. Do not take the chick out of the egg or help it hatch . That said it the bird is stuck in there for hours and is slowing down it may need help. It sounds like this bird just need more time.

There's still maybe 3/5 of the shell left and just about all of the membrane. The part of the membrane I did pull off still has what looks like the inner layer of it (a thinner, clear one). There's plenty of room for the chick to poke its head out without trouble I'd say. It has kept itself in a good position to breathe. Its been 7 hours and nothing has changed. I covered it in a soaking wet wash rag when i went to bed. Got up this morning and everything still seems condusive to a good hatching. Should the temp still be 99.5? Our thermo sucks at measuring humidity, but I believe its around 60%. This may sound crazy, but could the chick be resting? Thanks again everybody.

From my experience, if you have one this far out, just pick enough of the rest of the egg back so that the bird's head is out....
have had some lazy hatchers in the past, and they all turned out to be just fine... just stop if there is ANY sign of fresh blood!

The dried membrane will come off if you put a couple drops of water on it and wait, then very gently and carefully slide it off. If its dried up it won't bleed, but the chick will be stuck if dry membrane has attached itself. Once their head comes out, and if they're not stuck to dried membrane, they usually wiggle free of the egg quite quickly!

My husband had to work so he asked that I post this. Our chick hatched with the help of my husband. He started pulling the membrane and it wasn't bleeding so he pulled most of it away and the chick fell out. The yolk was completely obsorbed. It was acting very frail and not moving at all after it hatched. It stomach is very swollen and squishy to touch. I've never seen a chick like that and am worried something is wrong with it. Have any of you heard of this? I'm not sure had to add a picture to this thread so I will post it under our pictures on our profile and you can take a look. I did just get back from being out for about 1 1/2hrs and the chick is still alive and moving alot more but its stomach still looks horrible. Its eyes are also open now.

Had a baby hatch 3 days ago. Exactly the same, swollen navel area. Also very weak. It recovered within 2 hours and it's fine now. It's lively, running around, eating etc. Just keep it warm and give it time to recover.

Oh, forgot to add: lovely pics on your profile!
