Hello everyone! I have a Rhode island red that we rescued today, she had twine that had been wrapped around her “ankle area” that had been there for quite some time it was very swollen. We were able to free the twine from it but she is not able to use that foot. We are hoping it does not get infected, but ultimately want to know if it does not get better will she be ok/ able to lay eggs. And is there anything we should do to help the injury?

Pictures will certainly help, but for now, wash the wound as best you can, put some antibiotic ointment on it and give her time to heal, I'd try and keep her separate from others for a bit, as for it affecting her egg laying? it shouldn't.

Thank you very much. What type of ointment would you recommend?

What eggcessive said, antibiotic ointment etc.. I've got a pullet right now that was attacked we believe by her flock mates, they got her good, ripped her tail feathers out, back feathers and left her bloody, had her momma not found her when she did, the little one would have been dead since chickens if they see blood will cannibalize the injured chicken.. I got a call for help, went and got the baby, she got washed with hibiclens, then rinsed, after that had hydrogen peroxide when it quit bubbling she was rinsed again and then had triple antibiotic ointment put on. so far so good, she's eating, drinking and loves the scrabbled eggs I'd made for her for extra protein.. She'll get another bath tonight so that I can get a better view of her injuries. Yesterday was clean her up best I could and let her calm down, pray she didn't have shock from the attack.

Plain Triple Antibiotic Ointment, Neosporin, polysporin or similar. Betadine would work as well. Hopefully, there is no nerve damage, but that is a possibility. Is the skin pink or normal colored?

Most of the skin is normal colored, but if you look in the picture that I posted there is a little bit of pink. We put ointment on it and wrapped it, but is there anything else we should do with the pink area?
