I just wanted to post an update on my plight to keep chickens in Eastpointe. Our code was changed in the fall of 2009 from no roosters nor commercial batteries to no chickens at all unless 1) you are transporting them through the city 2) you are a veterinary hospital or 3) you are a medical or educational institution using chickens for viewing, instruction, or study.
I submitted a letter today stating we are a home school family and pointed out all the cool things we learn from chickens. Mentioning not only the obvious biology topics but also historical, social, and now legal subjects. Aren't chickens awesome?
I will let you all know the results.
PS.
What is your opinion about the city changing the code? I read something about cities needing permission to do that in MRFA, but does that only apply when they have an active complaint? The conundrum is the old code said, no commercial batteries. So we could have chickens residentially but couldn't sell anything. MRFA only protects farming operations and to be considered a farming operation you had to sell something no matter how small the sale.
