Well, I'm having to deal with a prolapsed vent for the first time and have read a number of posts about it. I've got a few questions, though: I've read that I should rinse the prolapse with a mild antiseptic. What would that be? Is it worth going out and buying Prep H? Or should I use honey? To push the prolapse in, can I use olive oil to lubricate my finger?
Thanks so much!

Update: Well, I tried bacitracin and honey and pushing it back in, but it just keeps popping right back out. I think there's an egg stuck. So now I'm going to try a warm bath...- for the chicken, that is. :)

Keep us posted. I don't know much about prolapse, but it seems like it is going to happen to everyone sooner or later.

My favorite hen had a prolapse last week and I ended up using a mixture of sugar, honey, witch hazel and antibiotic ointment. I actually used raw manuka honey for it's healing benefits. Her prolapse wasn't terrible. I actually gently pushed the prolapse section back in with a soft cloth covered in witch hazel with my husband holding her upside down, then I put the mixture onto her vent.. It was so gross, it was like her vent was eating the mixture. It hasn't come back out since. I've heard people swear by Prep H because it shrinks the tissues, witch hazel does to a certain extent. I guess it really depends on how bad the prolapse really is.

Well, I've continued to put Prep H and antibiotic ointment on it and push it in, but it kept popping out. She layed an egg a couple of hours ago, and I pushed it in after that. So far so good! I'm keeping my fingers crossed...
It's been nice getting to know this girl better. She was one of my most skittish hens, but now she's quite gentle with me. Eats out of my hand, lets me give her a bath... I hope she makes it.

I hope so too!
